Mastro's Steakhouse - Finally it's in New York!

My fiancé has a lot of family in Southern California and has visited the Mastro's Restaurants several times with his cousins. I, on the other hand had never heard of this restaurant. While sitting on our couch on a random night, my fiancé's cousin texted him announcing the opening of Mastro's  in New York (1285 6th Ave. at 52nd St.) the following week and how we should rush to get a reservation for opening night. Ben immediately jumped on the opportunity to get a reservation for the opening night. I was surprised that we didn't have issues getting a reservation, but was very happy we were able to!
Long story short, my fiancé ended up having a major issue with his appendix later that week, and had to get it removed just a few days prior to the opening of Mastro's. While in the hospital, which we were stuck in for 4 nights, he kept praying he would be out in time for his reservation at Mastro's. His excitement for this restaurant really made me look forward to this meal, and made me a little surprised that while in the hospital, that this was the most important thing to get out on time for! He ended up getting out of the hospital on the Tuesday afternoon, just a day before the opening.
With the intense pain in his abdomen from the surgery, he still made it to the restaurant on opening night. It was crowded and definitely a scene. We were happily sat downstairs where it was much quieter and away from the live band upstairs. I wonder if the band is always there, or just for opening night, because that would be way too loud for every night!
The staff was very friendly and the service top notch, while you could tell they were still working out kinks and adjusting since it was the first night.

Complimentary Bread - Included Pretzels Rolls!

The bread basket was placed on our table while we were looking at the drink menu. I liked this, since I prefer when restaurants give you the bread while you are perusing the menu, instead of making you wait until you have ordered. I tend to arrive at meals starving because I'm saving my appetite for the meal ahead, so I welcome a nice basket of bread on the table! The bread was made with love. It included baguettes, crunchy dinner loafs, and pretzel loafs! The pretzel bread was definitely the highlight!

Mastro's Boulevardier -
High West Barrel-Aged Bourbon, Vya Sweet Vermouth, Gran Classico Amaro, and bitters chilled and served neat with an orange zest
  • The drink menu had many many options, and offered a huge selection of wine, cocktails, and a large variety of liquors.
  • I chose the Mastro's Boulevardier, which took longer than the other drinks at the table, because apparently the downstairs bar had not been supplied with all the ingredients to make this drink. The bar tender had to have ingredients brought down from the upstairs bar. I didn't mind this, because I knew it was the first night, but I do hope that they have corrected all these little kinks for the future! The drink was strong, and mixed perfectly, although was missing the orange zest :(
  •  To add to the humor of our week long torture at the hospital, there was a drink on the menu called "Penicillin", which was funny because my fiancé learned he had a mild allergy to Penicillin and kept spiking fevers every time  he was given it in the hospital, which prevented us from going home for days. He of course had to order this drink, and he enjoyed it!

Lobster Mashed Potatoes
As one of the main sides to share for the table, we ordered the Lobster Mashed Potatoes. This was the dish that was most talked about in the days leading up to this dinner, so I was mostly excited to try this one! It was everything that I expected and more! It had many chunks of lobster claws in it, while the creamy sauce added so much flavor! I also loved the vegetables that were added, although they were there more for the flavor and texture, definitely not for the nutrients, since this dish was far from healthy! We shared this dish between 4 of us, and felt that each of us got a decent amount of lobster on our plate, so they definitely were not stingy! I will choose this over Lobster Mac anytime!

Beer Battered Onion Rings
Our other side, the beer battered onion rings were coated in batter, and almost tasted like donuts! They were so good, and so large! The onions also stayed inside the coating with each bite, which is a very important thing in onion rings! My fiancé's father is an onion ring connoisseur and he enjoyed these very much and would definitely order them again!

Porterhouse
The Porterhouse was cooked just as we had asked. It came out with the edges piping hot, plate steaming, but with the center nice and rare as we love! Unfortunately, Ben's father's porterhouse did not come out as requested. It was overcooked for him, since he likes his meat practically "moving" on the plate. The waiter gladly took the porterhouse back and remade his order and brought it out done perfectly for him! Everyone was happy!

Sauteed Mushrooms
The sautéed mushrooms were honestly the best mushrooms I have ever had in my life. Each bite melted in my mouth. They were probably coated in butter and oil, but they were just so good, that I would eat them this way everyday! Such a treat!

Signature Warm Butter Cake
The waiter brought us the Signature Warm Butter Cake on the house due to the mix up in the preparation of Ben's father's Porterhouse. I had heard so much about this cake, and wondered how a cake with butter in the name could be good? It was very sweet, lemony, light, fluffy, and definitely buttery! It was delicious! To make things even sweeter, it was accompanied with homemade cream which was the freshest cream I have ever tasted! I normally go for chocolate desserts, but this was such a wonderful treat!
Fresh Cream on the Side of the Butter Cake
I definitely will return to Mastro's! This steakhouse does not only have great steak, but their appetizers, sides, and desserts are amazing! Run, don't walk! Get to Mastro's!

Felice 64 - Perfect Neighborhood Wine Bar

On a rainy Saturday evening when we had no plans,  my fiancé and I asked another couple who lived nearby if they wanted to stay local and go to Felice 64 (1164 1st. Ave at 64th St.) for dinner. I hadn't been back to any of the Felice restaurants since my "1st" date with Ben and I am glad we decided to visit this place once again! We had gone to the one located in the 80's previously, and I must say that if I had to compare the two locations, I much prefer Felice 64. It is smaller, more intimate, and seems much more rustic Italian. Although, it is unfortunate that they do not accept reservations and are not on Open Table when, the other Felice locations are on Open Table.

The charcuterie selection is very mouthwatering and delicious. Each bite of cheese and meat was scrumptious and of superb, fresh quality.

Formaggi e Salumi
Chef's selection of imported cheeses & cured meats - $27 for four of each

The Crostonis on the menu are all very unique and different. There are 5 different kinds to choose from on the menu. Some covered in vegetables and cheese, some covered with meat and cheese, and while one even had swordfish!

The Amazing Crostonis!

We selected two Crostonis that looked extremely similar on the plate, but tasted so different from each other!

Crostone Burrata Filante
Eggplant, zucchini and burrata cheese served on toasted Tuscan bread with mixed greens.

The eggplant was very fresh and a great touch that offset the flavor of the burrata. The burrata was extra creamy and melted in your mouth. The bread was nice and crunchy which made it a nice compliment to the burrata.

Crostone Ricotta
Fig jam, ricotta, honey and toasted almonds served on toasted Tuscan bread with mixed greens.

The fig jam and honey offset the rich taste of the ricotta. The toasted almonds gave it that nice crunchy texture and nutty flavor. MMM MMM good!

Fusilli al Ferretto served with homemade tomato sauce and burrata cheese

Anything with burrata is good! The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was fresh and you could tell it was made in house.

Seafood Special with Lobster

This was a great choice from the special menu. It was loaded with seafood, especially lobster! I would order it every time if it was on the regular menu.

Felice 64 is definitely a place to return to! It is great for a casual night out in the neighborhood, a romantic date, or even a special occasion.
We selected two very Crostonis that looked extremely similar on the plate, but tasted so different from each other!

The Australian Restaurant, Bar and, Lounge: An Addictive Happy Hour

There is something magical about The Australian (located at 20 West 38th St., New York, NY 10018). Every time a friend suggests going there for happy hour I immediately feel excited and can't wait to go! It is one of those places that I could go to over and over again and never get sick of. It is very casual and perfect for happy hour! I miss working nearby because I can't go for lunch or happy hour as often. Also, anyone I have introduced this place to, has also become hooked!

They have a great happy hour menu Monday through Friday from 4-7 on drinks and also on some appetizer selections. This place is like a diamond in the rough because it's prices are actually reasonable, compared to normal expensive NYC prices.

I was lucky enough to be in the neighborhood a few months ago, and got to stop in for lunch! It kind of made my week, and now that I am writing my review a few months later, it is making me want to go there very soon again!

Warm Spiked Cider (part of the seasonal fall menu)

I was lucky to visit when they had a special fall menu. The warm spiked cider was just what I needed that day because it was getting cold outside, and I was piled high with stress. This drink relieved me of stress because of its smooth, sweet, and warm flavor. I also felt it after the first few sips, so it definitely was spiked!

Grilled Kangaroo Salad

Grilled kangaroo over chickpea, cucumber, and cherry tomatoes.

This salad is very unique because it doesn't even contain lettuce. It is very protein packed with the kangaroo and the chickpeas. Definitely not a salad that leaves you hungry 2 hours later. This is one of my go-to entrees at the Australian because it's healthy, hearty, and delicious. I also love that it ties into the Aussie flavors by having kangaroo instead of chicken.

Aussie Nachos
Blue corn chips with guacamole, sour cream, sweet chili sauce, mango salsa, & crispy shallots
(Can have as vegetarian or add chicken)

The Aussie nachos are extremely addictive! When I went to the Australian for the first time, my friend introduced me to the Aussie Nachos that can be ordered in a happy hour portion, and I have been hooked since. There is something to be said for adding the "sweet" flavor to nachos instead of spicy. The sweet chili sauce really is a hit on this dish, and makes every bite sweet, savory and just that amazing. The mango salsa and guacamole is also very fresh and homemade. This is one of those appetizers that I would order as a meal and not want to share with anyone because I enjoy it that much!

I highly suggest if you work in the fashion district, that you check this place out. They also have an upstairs area where you can have private parties or gatherings which is nice. On the weekends it is less busy and actually kind of relaxing which is nice, since the fashion district isn't busy on weekends.

Teavana's New Tea Bars : Loving their new cafe experience!

I received a coupon in the mail for a free lunch(Rice/Noodle Bowl or Buns) with purchase of a tea at Teavana. I was surprised to see this, since I didn't know that there was a Teavana in Manhattan, and I also didn't realize they served food. I always knew of Teavana as the tea shop at malls where you can try the tea and buy it, but could never actually buy meals and enjoy them in a cafe setting.  I was definitely excited to try this new Teavana concept out, since the menu items sounded so great!
I learned as I set foot into the new Teavana on the Upper East Side that they have a new concept to their brand where they are opening up cafes where customers can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner and also relax inside like they would at a Starbuck's or Panera Bread. What makes their menu unique is the Asian dishes that pair perfectly with tea. The dishes are fairly healthy as well, and definitely filling. I must give credit to where credit is due, and must say that Teavana's new concept is definitely working!

Here is a sampling of the menu below:

As soon as I entered the cafe, I was greeted by one of the employees immediately asking if I needed help. I loved that they were so willing to help and ready for any questions. I asked many questions about the new menu, and the woman helped me select the dish that she thought sounded perfect for me based on my taste. If I had wanted, I could have bought loose tea to enjoy later as well, which makes the experience a one stop shop, where you can buy tea, and also enjoy a meal!
After placing my order, I was given a number to display at my table until my food and tea was ready. As I was sitting at my table waiting for my food, I looked around and noticed that every seat in the place was taken and that this new concept was really working for Teavana because people were already dining here, rather than just enjoying tea. After a few minutes, my food and tea were hand delivered to the table, which I thought was a nice touch to the cafe experience.

My Meal:
Mandarin Hoisin Pork
Shredded pork, cabbage, pickled carrots, herbs in broth, and topped with mandarin-ginger hoisin sauce.

My dish was perfectly flavored, and had heaping amounts of vegetables. I loved how the vegetables were fresh and crunchy and placed in the broth after the broth was heated, rather than the vegetables being cooked in the broth and served soggy. It was a very refreshing and healthy meal, and perfect for after the gym, which is where I was right before hand. I was definitely surprised by the quality of the meal at a chain cafe. I compare this to the food Starbuck's serves, and this is much better than that!

The tea I ordered was perfect and also served in a real mug, versus a to-go cup, which I thought felt more personal. Normally small cafes like this you'd expect more of a to-go type of experience.

I definitely plan to return for some of the other items on the menu, such as the salads or the buns! It is a perfect place to meet a friend for a quick bite and catch up, a quick after work meal, or enjoy a meal while studying!

The Rapoport Restaurant Group: Deck 84, Followed by Burt & Max's

When I visited Florida several weeks ago with my boyfriend, and now fiancé, we wanted to check out two of the restaurants that were part of the Rapoport group. We had met Burt when he came to the James Beard House this previous May to introduce a "Fresh From Florida" theme. We loved our experience at the James Beard House and loved the menu and food that his chefs served that evening. We promised Burt we would visit his restaurants next time we visited Boca, and that he would "take care of us" if we mentioned his name and how we knew him when we made the reservation.

We were really excited about visiting his restaurants and experiencing his fine cuisine again, but were also very excited to get special treatment. When we made our reservation at both restaurants we made sure to mention where and when we had met him, and also mentioned this when we checked in with the hostess. Neither the hostess, nor waitress at either restaurant showed any care of what we said and kind of just shrugged it off. It was a little disappointing to be promised something and not receive it.

We went to Deck 84 first, and really enjoyed our experience with the outdoor seating along the Intercoastal and fresh Florida themed menu. There was a lot of seafood and fresh fish on the menu. We went to Burt & Max's a few nights later and loved the even more unique menu that it had with short ribs, and other glutinous items that are usually part of a bar themed menu. When we were paying our bill at Burt & Max's, we were offered to join the rewards club for the Rapoport group for guests who come often and can eventually get enough points for free entrees or appetizers, etc. We were kind of disappointed that we were not even offered this rewards card at Deck 84 a few nights previous, since we could have had over 100 points from that meal alone added to our card. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she gave me the business card of the corporate office to get our bill from Deck 84 added to our account. I emailed the address on the card, and still haven't heard back three months later!

We did however enjoy our meals and will definitely return! We just won't expect special treatment in the future! My parents go to Burt & Max's regularly since they live nearby and I would have loved to give them all our points from our two visits, but oh well....
Now onto the important stuff, the food!

Deck 84

840 E. Atlantic Avenue
Delray Beach, FL

We learned while sitting at our table that the restaurant offers BYOB. We watched as another table brought their own bottles of wine and they were uncorked. Good to know for next time! :)

Another plus to our experience was our waitress Alexis, who was very thoughtful and acknowledged that we ordered 2 appetizers, a flat bread, and 1 main dish and didn't want us to be overwhelmed with dishes and food all at once. She told us she was going to put in the flatbread and main dish ten minutes after our appetizers so that our food would be spaced out. Thank god she did! Although, I wish she had told us we over ordered, because our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs that night and we had tons of leftovers!

Our Very Yummy drunks - Passion Fruit Mojito & Deck and Stormy

Passion Fruit Mojito-
Don Q Passion Fruit Rum, Passion Fruit Puree, Lime, Mint

Deck and Stormy -
Goslings Dark Rum, ginger beer, lime

Chef's Daily Ceviche
Coconut-citrus marinade, mango, avocado, bermuda onion, red pepper, crispy yucca.

We didn't love the consistency of this ceviche. It was more of a guacamole consistency because it had WAY TOO MUCH avocado in it! There was also a lot of fish in it, which at least made up for the overload in avocado. Ben and I both wished it was a little more citrusy like ceviche is supposed to be. Ultimately, we enjoyed the dish.

Conch & Shrimp Fritters
Served with tequila-lime cocktail sauce, chipotle remoulade.

The conch & shrimp fritters had corn kernels inside which was a very nice surprise and added to the texture and crunch of each bite. A very nice touch! One negative about this dish was that it was too similar to a crab cake consistency. We would have preferred if they were a little more crunchy like fritters should be. All in all we enjoyed these thoroughly!

Roasted Vegetable Flatbread
Roasted vegetables, san marzano tomatoes, goat cheese & herb cream.

We definitely enjoyed this flatbread! It was overloaded with vegetables in a very good way. This is one of those meals I could eat every day. It was just as good as leftovers too :)

Key Lime Mahi Mahi
Caramelized pineapple rice, sautéed spinach, citrus butter, crispy plantains.

This fish was cooked perfectly. It was flavored and seasoned to perfection and even though we were both so full, we finished every bite! The rice was sweet with pineapple flavoring and definitely a great accompaniment to the amazing Mahi Mahi to make this dish truly tropical.

Seasonal S'mores
This dessert was definitely rich and overwhelming. Based on the original description of it, I had hoped for more of a traditional S'more. The peanut butter toffee in the middle of the plate was definitely too hard to eat, which was disappointing because I ordered the dish because it was peanut butter and also S'mores in one dessert!  Dipping the graham crackers into the pot of melted S'more mix was pretty tasty, very messy, but definitely delicious!

Burt & Max's

9089 West Atlantic Avenue
Delray Beach, FL 33446

Burt & Max's definitely had more of a casual feeling that was good for families, groups, and just overall comfortable. They have a woodfired oven which was pretty nice addition to the menu since many of the items could be made in the oven.
We were seated right near the oven and the kitchen which normally I wouldn't enjoy, but I loved the view of all the food coming out and being able to see the inner workings of everything going on.

The Cure & The Delray Derby
The Cure-
Absolut Berri Acai, Pomegranate Juice, Blueberries, Simple Syrup, Fresh Lemon

Delray Derby-
Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Peach Preserve, Campari, Ice Tea, Thyme, Fresh Lime

Heirloom Tomato & Local Burrata
Balsamic glaze, Hawaiian sea salt, chiffonade basil, California olive oil.

This dish had the taste of summer in it! It was so refreshing. The texture of the burrata was perfect because it broke apart and released all the cream as soon as you cut into it. The balsamic glaze added exceptional flavor to the extremely fresh tomatoes. The tomatoes tasted as though they were hand picked off a tomato plant a second before they were served. Definitely a winning dish!

Onion Soup Dumplings
If only words could describe this dish. I love soup dumplings normally, but have never had fried ones, and especially onion ones! We were instructed by the waitress to make sure to put the whole dumpling in our mouth all at once, or otherwise we would end up losing all the soup. Glad we listened! The melted cheese and surrounding onion soup broth really soaked into each dumpling and gave it that extra added flavor. This dish was definitely a unique and different take on French onion soup because it turned French onion soup into individual bite size dumplings with all the same flavor as a whole French onion soup. This is definitely winner of all soup dumplings!

Short Rib Empanada-
Manchebo cheese, salsa picante, ahi crema

These were very tasty and enjoyable, but not as unique and interesting as the other items we ordered. It is pretty rare to feel that empanadas are the less exciting item on the table, but all the other appetizers were just that good. They definitely had a good helping of short rib, and were definitely savory.

Corn Bread :)

Slow Braised Beef Short Ribs
Whipped potatoes, bacon brussel sprouts, pearl onions, and wood roasted mushrooms, in a red wine mushroom jus.
We had the red wine mushroom jus on the side because Ben is allergic to mushrooms. Posted below.
With or without the red wine mushroom jus, this dish was exceptional. The meat was extremely tender and shredded easily with a fork. The vegetables and the mashed potatoes were deliciously flavored.

The Red Wine Mushroom Jus for the Beef Short Ribs
I loved the mushrooms in this sauce! I was happy that they were not pureed into a sauce, but actually were whole mushrooms to bite into. I am deprived of mushrooms since Ben can't eat them and we share all of our meals out. When I get to have mushrooms it is definitely a special occasion :) These ones were definitely great mushrooms!

Mahi Tacos 'A La Plancha
Salsa verde, aji crema, shredded cabbage, pickled onion, jalapeno and carrots, fire roasted salsa.

These tacos were spicy and refreshing at the same time. The jalapeños, and pickled onion mix clashed in a good way because the spicy was mixed with a pickled flavor. The only negative to this dish was that we were dining as a group of 4 people, and they only brought 3 tacos to the table. The waitress should have warned us of this, and asked if we wanted to order one extra taco so we all could have one. After it arrived at the table we asked the waitress to put one more taco in so we all could enjoy. We were then left waiting for it to arrive at the table so we could all each the tacos together.

Overall, the two restaurants that I dined at from the Rapoport Group were exceptional with menu choices, food, and service. Even though Burt & Max's isn't situated along a beautiful waterway like Deck 84 is, I much prefer it. Every item on the menu at Burt & Max's was mouth watering and made my eyes larger than my stomach. I can't wait till I go back to Boca to visit my parents so I can visit this restaurant again.

Aruba Through Our Stomachs!

Aruba is not only a great place for sun, sand, ocean, relaxation, and fun. It is also a place to wine and dine to your hearts content! In my many days there, I certainly explored as many restaurants as I could and I tried the best there was to eat! Follow me on my adventures below and hopefully I leave you with your mouth watering!

**Side note- if you click on the name of each restaurant below, it will bring you to their website so you can see where each is located :)

Gasparito Restaurant and Art Gallery

Small family owned intimate restaurant. Seats 20 people a night. Amazing experience with unique dishes and great service.

Escargot -
A traditional gratin with garlic and parmesan cheese topped with our home made Hollandaise sauce.
This was our first escargot of the trip, and definitely still remains my favorite! Who can resist cheesy escargot!

Aruban Combo -
A collection of Aruban Specialities featuring tasty Fish, Keshi Yena chicken and Kerry Kerry. There was also polenta!!

Grouper Fish Special-
Filet of fish topped with tender shrimps with your choice of Garlic, Lemon or Creole sauce. We chose to have the sauce on the side so we could taste, both the garlic/lemon sauce and also the creole sauce! We both preferred the creole sauce!!

Banana al Forno -
Fried banana topped with ice cream and homemade cream! Delicious! It was supposed to come with vanilla ice cream, but we asked for chocolate :)
This restaurant is definitely going to be on the list for next year!

-Located at Casa Del Mar Pool/Beach area
- Our home away from home...and the best happy hours!
- 2 for 1 drinks everyday from 12-1, 4-6, 9-10

Goat cheese wrapped in Italian Prosciutto ham -
Flash seared and served on a bed of greens with raspberry vinaigrette
MMMMazing! Ben makes these at home now!

Garlic Escargots 1/2 dozen -
Sizzling hot, and cooked in garlic butter
There are two missing snails from the photo because we got a little too excited when it arrived at the table! All the food at Matthews is amazing, but this appetizer is the only dish that actually disappointed me at Matthews. It was a little bland... Although, I guess its hard to compete against Gasparito's cheesy escargot!

Ship's Mate Sandwich -
From the lunch menu, but ordered at dinner because its just that good...
Lightly breaded fillet of grouper carefully fried and served on an Italian garlic loaf bread with tartar sauce

Pina Colada Shrimp -
Caribbean shrimp prepared with pine apple, Caribbean rum and coconut in a creamy sauce
This was delicious! A fresh take on coconut shrimp since its not fried :)

This was not the first and not the last time we have eaten at Matthew's! Here is our second meal we had at Matthew's this trip!

Night two at Matthew's!

Grouper Special of the night-
Served with mussels, shrimp, vegetables, and rice in a garlic sauce.

The Matthew's Sandwich-
Sautéed chicken with chunks of pineapple and bacon.
Ben's favorite sandwich that he swears by! ( I disagree, the Shipmate's or the Steak Sandwich are much better!)

Tuna Steak -
Sesame crusted, flash seared in extra virgin olive oil, served with soy and wasabi.
Aria's go to meal! I may order this next year, because it was so good!

Chocolate Mousse
Very cute, because it's served as mice!

Profiterolles

Sole Mare

Italian yumminess in Aruba! :) Someone asked me if I could pick my favorite dish of the trip, or even my life, this restaurant makes it! See details below!

The Famous Polenta! Better than bread...

Escargot Bourguignonne -
Shelled snails highlighted in white wine & Perfectly flavored garlic butter

Calamari Napoletani -
Sauteed squid in garlic tomato sauce ...MMMM
It can also be ordered fried and served in garlic tomato sauce.

Carpaccio al Parmigiano -
Thin slice marinated raw beed served with extra olive oil and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano cheese over a bed of fresh arugula salad

Sole Mare Special -
Truly a seafood lovers dish- Jumbo shrimp, the largest on the island, mussels, clams, calamari, and the Caribbean Lobster served over a bed of spaghetti in a white wine and garlic sauce.
This was submitted with their homemade pappardelle which is to die for!

Live Lobster prepared with a white wine and garlic butter sauce!
They cut up the lobster tail and they stuff it back into the shell of the lobster to serve! What a unique way of eating lobster without all the work :)
"The difference between Maine Lobster and Caribbean lobster is that Maine Lobster has 50% less meat. "

Live Lobster prepared with a Fra Diavolo sauce!
They cut up the lobster tail and they stuff it back into the shell of the lobster to serve! This was my dish, and I was surprised that I preferred the Fra Diavolo sauce over the white wine and garlic sauce. I was told to order it this way, and I am glad I listened! This was honestly the best meal of my life!

Side of pappardelle in Fra Diavolo sauce.
It came with the lobster :)

Screaming Eagle

We decided to try this restaurant out because of their special "game" menu. We luckily went earlier in the week, since we heard that the night after we went they were out of the the special items on the menu and were only offering the regular menu.
The ambiance of this restaurant is different than others, because you can elect to have a table where you are eating in a bed, kind of like a Miami vibe. We chose to each at a regular table since we were there as a family!

Amuse-Bouche of tomato soup with a crunch crouton
This was a very nice start to the meal with warm tomato soup and a crunchy crouton. The textures worked very well together, and the flavors set us up for a nice meal ahead!

Carpaccio of kangaroo
Accompanied with hummus, orange wedges, tomato, croutons, rucola, parmesan curls, and vandouvian mayonnaise.

Truffle Spaghettini
Creamy pasta with truffle, served with Serrano ham and poached egg ...this was very truffly and delicious!

Venison Fillet
Served with mashed potato, brussel sprouts, packed red wine pear, and red wine-vanilla sauce.
Cooked to perfection with every bite being juicy and full of flavor. The sauce was an added extra bonus because it was like crack!

Pan Fried Reindeer
Served with compote of quinces, haricots vets, mashed potato, and star anis sauce.

Trilogy of Chocolate Mousse
layers of dark, white, and milk chocolate mousse served with chocolate ice cream!

Carambola

Champignons de Paris-
Snails marinated in fresh garlic, sautéed with green onions, shallots, and white wine sauce, and served on stemmed mushroom caps 'augratin and accompanied with toast. MMMM!

Kingston Shrimp-
Shrimps dipped in Jamaican rum sweetened coconut sauce, sautéed with butter and garlic, served with curry mango sauce.

Lobster Mojito Cocktail -
Chunks of lobster, freshened with mint leaves, served on a bed of crushed ice, mixed lettuce, cherry tomatoes, fried plantain, and wasabi cocktail sauce. Very refreshing!

Mahi-Mahi Coco-
Mahi-Mahi fillet, pan-fried and served with creamy coconut Aruban rum sauce, fried corn polenta "funchi" and sprinkled with baked coco flakes.

Samie's Bouillabaisse-
Lobster, shrimp, fish, squid, mussels, and scallops cooked in a lobster reduction, accompanied by white rice and topped with spiced guacamole. This was the winner of the table!

Fish of the Day

Papiamento

Ben and I had our date night at this beautiful restaurant known by the whole island as one of the most romantic restaurants. You get to dine in an original 126 year old "cunucu" house with a beautiful pool where tables are line along the edge for dining. We were lucky to get a table on the edge of the pool so we could look out over it.  The restaurant's policy is to only have one seating per table a night, so you have all the time in the world to enjoy the ambiance and food.
They are also known for their "Grilled and Served on the Stone" meals. This meal was one of our more healthy meals, since the meat or fish you select comes sizzling on a stone with the sauce on the side. It was a very hearty and appetizing meal without all the sauces that hide the flavor of the meat or fish in the meal!
Beautiful bench near the entrance!

Our beautiful corner table right next to the pool!

This bread has amazing flavor with the spices on top!

Escargots Dyonnaise-
Flame broiled snails with fresh rosemary garlic butter

Martinis!

Our meals came with Caesar salad to start, which was a nice addition to the meal. This was the only restaurant of the whole trip that included salad. I am noticing most restaurants these days don't include salad to start, which is very unfortunate!

Madame Butterfly -
Tenderloin steak cut "butterfly" and served with a green and pink peppercorn sauce.
I loved the vegetables that came with this meal. The meat was so tasty that it didn't even need the sauce!

Neptune-
Caribbean rock lobster, mahi-mahi and shrimp, served with lemon butter.
This was a great assortment of seafood that was accompanied with very tasty pureed sweet potatoes!

The meals were accompanied with a side of rice.

Madame Janette Restaurant

This restaurant is the restaurant that requires two visits per trip without fail! It is that amazing! The restaurant is partially indoors and mostly outdoors. It is a mixture of Caribbean, asian fusion, Dutch, French, and Aruban specialities. You definitely get quite the taste of cultures here.

Our first visit-

The ONIONS! -
They give these to you with your bread complimentary. They are marinated in vinegar, oil, and spices and are very addicting.

The Famous Bang Bang Shrimp-
Sweet and spicy crispy shrimp, served on sliced Romaine Lettuce, fresh cut pineapple Concasse and Sesame seeds.
Ben doesn't go to Madame Janette's without ordering this dish. When I first heard of this restaurant from Ben, this was the dish he spoke most about. I have been there 4 times now, and have tried this dish 4 times :) Definitely worth a try!

Janette's Sashimi Grade Ahi Tuna-
Sesame pepper crusted Ahi Tuna on a bed of Thai greens, spicy Sriracha vinaigrette and toasted pine nuts.
Definitely my favorite appetizer!
Janette's Black Angus X-Mas Carpaccio -
Served with lightly marinated garden greens, extra virgin olive oil, black truffle aged Balsamico vinaigrette, roasted pine nuts, and sprinkled with Parmeggiano Reggiano.
This appetizer could be a meal, and one that bite after bite you could never get tired of. Truly amazing, and one of the best carpaccio's that exists.

The Original "Almond Grouper"-
Invented in 1999 at Madame Janette. Often copied, never reached! A fine grouper filet in a coat of Almonds served with a creamed spinach sauce.
This dish is famous, and one that I wished I had ordered last year after trying someone else's left overs the day after. This year, I was so happy I ordered it and got to enjoy it fresh the night of, instead of as left overs. Left overs are a definite when it comes to this dish because it's so big!

"Our Jingle Bells Golden Snapper Fillet"-
Herb coated fillet of snapper, sautéed in French lime butter, served over a bed of spinach fettucini and topped with baby lobster ragout and a splash of hollandaise
This is Ben's new go to dish. He used to order the Honey Glazed Seabass, but has now switched to a new favorite dish!

The remnants of a side order of Janette's famous potato gratin. Delicious!

Night Two at Madame Janette's!

Santa Claus Lobster Cappuccino-
Homemade light creamy Lobster bisque served with chunks of lobster, a splash of Hennessy X.O. Cognac and crowned with a spoon of cream.

Schnitzel al Montero-
Topped with sautéed onions, island champignons, and a finger licking oxtail place.

The Spoon-
The ultimate dessert lover dessert! It is meant to share for 2 people, but it is definitely shareable for the whole table! It is one of those everything but the kitchen sink type of desserts. It has fried bananas, caramelized sugar, strawberries, cream, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, and chocolate syrup! Very sweet way to finish a meal and also good picture opportunities because it is served on a huge spoon!

"It's all about that base" - Done specially for us because of our "new" engagement!
Fried milka cakes with Nutella ice cream and whipped topping sprinkled with toasted almonds.
Beautiful presentation and very rich! They also served us champagne with our dessert to celebrate our engagement :)

Oreo Fritters "To Die For"-
Served with vanilla ice cream and whipped topping.
You can't go wrong with fried Oreos and ice cream!

Wacky Wahoo's

This restaurant I looked most forward to because Ben and his family went there without me last year after I left Aruba. They raved about the quality of the fish and how good everything was, that I couldn't wait to try it this year. I definitely loved every bite!

Wacky Wahoo's Arubian Ceviche-
An assortment of marinated local fish and seafood flavored with fresh lime and cilantro. A hot and refreshing treat.
This ceviche was probably one of the best I have had! It was extremely fresh and very plentiful.

Aruban Fish Soup -
A mixture of fish and seafood in a delicious broth.

Chef's Special of the night! -
Grilled grouper filet served with broiled Caribbean lobster tail in garlic basil butter, cornbread, baked plantain, mixed vegetables, and rice with an island flavor!

Definitely on next year's list!

Yemanja Woodfired Grill-

This restaurant was another one of my favorites of the trip. We happened to have gone there on a very busy nice and the service was extremely slow. The food was very creative and worth every bite and calorie. Also, it didn't hurt that the whole restaurant had built in entertainment for the night, (you had to be there to understand), but let's just say the night ended with us asking the waitress if a certain customer was a "working girl", and everyone around us laughed in agreement. There was also a major family feud where a mother was scolding her child so the whole restaurant could hear and then broke into tears. So this night was not tame, but the food was worth every minute!

Cuban Mojito and Signature Margarita!
Cuban Mojito-
Havana 3 Anos, Mint leaves, lime juice, sugar cane
Signature Margarita -
Strawberry & Jalapeño with Sauza tequila, Cointreau, Agave syrup, lime juice

Beef Carpaccio Bombe -
Salad Blend, arugula, thinly slice raw certified Angus beef tenderloin, pesto, Old Amsterdam cheese, Truffle sauce, balsamic creme.
This was the most unique way I have ever seen beef carpaccio served. It was a lot of fun cutting into the bombe and having the salad explode out onto the plate. It was a very good portion and so so good. I want more now!

Filo Dough with Goat Cheese-
Mixed salad, warm film dough pouch filled with goat cheese, prunes, sundries tomatoes, shallots, walnuts, and honey.
Very unique and a nice sweet way to start the meal!

Blackened Triple Tail -
Truffle risotto, glazed green asparagus & snow peas, white wine sauce, tepid tomato dressing.

Chocolate Molten Lava Cake -
Served with strawberries and vanilla gelato.
When I see the words "chocolate molten lava cake" on a dessert menu, my mouth waters, and my full stomach tells me that it has more room for dessert. This is one of my must order desserts if is on the menu. This one lived up to my expectations :) Yummy.

Twist of Flavors

This is a brand new restaurant located at the Alhambra Casino Mall. We decided to give it a try, and we are glad we did! It was extremely chill, convenient, and the food was packed with flavor.

French Onion Soup -
This was the only disappointing item at this meal. As much as french onion soup is one of my favorite soups, and normally nothing can go wrong, this one was definitely lacking. The flavor of the soup was very tasty, and had a lot of onions to enjoy. The only thing missing was the cheese! There was a little cheese on the toast, but there wasn't the quantity that french onion soups need!

Asian beef strips with wake salad and sweet ginger soy sauce

Gratinated Shrimp Garlic

Mini Sushi Delight!

Lobster Xtravaganza-
Rich lobster meat covered with fresh herbal white wine sauce, old Amsterdam cheese and gratinated in the oven

Kono Pizza

After experiencing this place in Aruba, I found that you can find it in Italy, and a few places in the US. It is still very limited. However, it was a really great snack and wasn't the typical greasy slice of pizza. In some way, it felt healthier.

Kono Pizza - comes in many flavors!

Ricardo's

Very casual and local restaurant located at the Aruba Beach Club where we stay. They have great breakfast, lunch, and dinner! During lunch you can sit at the restaurant in a bathing suit, and then return for dinner dressed up. They also have 2 for 1 happy hour everyday with top shelf alcohol from 12-1, 4-6, and 9-10.

Goat Cheese & Mango-
Deep fried goat cheese served with a creamy mango dressing.

10oz. Caribbean Lobster Tail -
Can be served al la termidor, grilled, or fra diablo. Served with fresh vegetables and rice.
We meant to order our tail far diablo, but forgot state it when we ordered, so we received it grilled. Still very good and a good size portion, however it would have been much more moist far diablo. Next time!

Coconut-Pineapple Shrimps-
Served with coconut flakes and roasted pineapples.
This dish was full of flavor and you could definitely taste the coconut and pineapple! Oddly, a shrimp dish was better than the lobster dish, but probably because the sauce on this dish was so amazing!

Grilled Tuna Steak-
Sesame crusted and served with wasabi-mango sauce.
This dish wasn't mine, but I definitely may order next year if its still on the menu! The taste I had of it was delicious!

Lobster Pasta-
Lobster pasta on creamy vodka sauce.
This dish was more than anyone bargained for at the table! It had a whole lobster tail, and mixed seafood in the pasta. The vodka sauce was unreal, and I definitely may consider ordering this next year too! This was my mom's dish and she definitely made a great choice!

Quinta del Carmen

This brand new restaurant opened up while we were in Aruba and is owned by Barefoot. It was originally a house owned by a Dr. that helped patients at his house before the first hospital on the island was created. It is a beautiful place inside and out, and the food was fabulous. If Ben and I didn't already have a deposit on a venue in NY for our wedding, I would say, this would be the perfect place for a wedding! It was so beautiful!

Cheese Croquettes-
Mixed cheese croquettes, served with a raspberry coulis and a summer salad with grapes and walnuts.

Carpaccio Teriyaki-
Marinated raw beef tenderloin, topped with sesame seeds and teriyaki sauce, bell pepper, cucumber and gourmet lettuce.

 Goat Cheese Fritters -
Goat cheese blended with hand selected herbs and spices, fried until golden, served over a salad of potato, olives, bell pepper, and walnuts

Greenshell Mussels -
Greenshell mussels on the half shell, topped with a fresh tomato salsa, au gratin with Gouda cheese.

Grouper Caprese-
Grouper filet topped with tomato sauce and buffalo mozzarella, served on a bed of pasta in pesto sauce.
This was the dish that Ben and I shared. It was good, and unique, but at the table it was the most underwhelming of all the dishes. If this dish was the most underwhelming, that says good things about the other dishes on the table!

Duck Breast -
Duck breast, served with lime, honey, and fresh ginger sauce.
This was my favorite dish at the table! The duck was cooked to perfection and so juicy!

Grouper, Shrimp, and Salmon-
Filet of grouper, topped with shrimp, smoked salmon, green asparagus and goat cheese, finished with a white wine herb sauce.

Pork Mediterranee-
Port Tenderloin with brie, served with a sauce of olive, onions, sundried tomatoes, basically, red wine, and a pinch of mustard. Served over vegetable.
This dish was sweet and savory!

Caribbean Lobster Tails -
Two 6oz. lobster tails, served on a skewer with drawn butter.

Alcoholic Coffee for Dessert - I forgot the name of this drink :(

This small family owned Portuguese, Aruban, and International cuisine restaurant is one of the local Aruban's favorites. It is always crowded with everyone seat taken. Their sangria is a must order!

Stuffed Avocado -
Stuffed with a choice of: Bacalhau Vinaigrette (A Portuguese delight, cod fish marinated in a vinaigrette) or Shrimp in a homemade "Salsa Rosado".
We chose the shrimp!

Creole "Sushi Roll" with a choice of: Sushi mixed (salmon & crab), crab, salmon, or shrimp)-
Wrapped with plantain, with cream cheese & avocado and served with homemade eel sauce.
We chose the mixed with salmon and crab. This is truly unique sushi because it is wrapped with fried plantain. Very tasty!

Conch-
Served in Aruban creole sauce.

Fish special with shrimp and calamari
-Served with plantains, vegetables, and rice in a coconut curry sauce.

I hope you enjoyed my adventures in eating my way through Aruba. Now it's time to start the wedding diet!!!

Enjoy!
